Collaborative Data Services (CDS) is committed to health equity and inclusion by fostering collaboration with local communities. We are currently seeking a part-time English-Spanish Translator/Interpreter who will be responsible for translating and/or reviewing a variety of materials including but not limited to research study documents and recordings of interviews and focus groups. The incumbent follows strict regulatory guidelines in accomplishing work assignments. Non-routine decisions are referred to the supervisor. The position reports to the CDS Project Manager.
The Translator/Interpreter is proficient in Spanish, both verbally and in writing (Native-level proficiency is preferred). Candidates must be certified by DSHS, the American Translators Association (ATA) OR have obtained a university degree in Translation or Applied Linguistics; AND have a minimum of 3 years of verifiable experience providing document translations. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to effective communication across language barriers and make a meaningful impact on individuals' access to participation in health research studies.
This is a part-time, benefits-eligible position.
This role will have the opportunity to work partially at our campus and remotely.
Responsibilities
Translation
- Translate research study documents, scientific newsletters, marketing materials, email correspondence to research participants, and other materials as requested from English to Spanish (forward and back translation), ensuring adherence to our translation style guide.
- Translate and adapt research study documents that contain technical research/medical information by cross-referencing specialized dictionaries and term bases.
- Understanding the study client's target demographic and be able to render a full adaptation of the source documents, ensuring translated texts convey original meaning, intent and tone.
- Understand regional variations of Spanish.
- Transcribe audio of qualitative interviews and focus groups (phone/video conference calls) in Spanish and translating them into English.
- Collaborate with translation team to coordinate translation assignments for projects and regulatory deadlines.
- Maintain and update glossaries and translation memories.
Interpretation
- Provide sight translation (orally translating brief written text, for example non-English speaking patients completing a short questionnaire or survey).
- Facilitate communication between moderator/interviewer and participants for focus groups, group interviews and one-on-one interviews.
Editing and Proofreading
- Review and edit translated materials to ensure accuracy, consistency, readability and completeness.
- Proofread translation for grammatical, spelling and typographical errors.
- Collaborate with translation team to polish translations and improve processes.
Documentation and Record Keeping
- Maintain organized records of clients, source and target files.
- Familiarity with HIPAA regulations and compliance standards
- Keep track of translation projects and deadlines, ensuring timely completion.
Communications
- Collaborate with the Hutch and local community outreach organizations to help facilitate inclusivity in research studies.
- Advise investigators and study teams on cultural nuances and differences to ensure effective recruitment strategies.

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- 3 years' experience providing document translations in a professional business setting.
- Certified by DSHS, American Translators Association (ATA) OR have obtained a university degree in Translation, Interpretation or Applied Linguistics OR have obtained a certificate from an accredited school or organization.
- Strong ability to communicate professionally and accurately in Spanish and English (oral and written).
- Proficiency in translation management systems (Trados, MemoQ, Smartcat, etc.) and computer-assisted translation tools.
- Experience with Microsoft applications.
- Ability to multitask and be flexible.
- Excellent time management skills.
- Highly organized, detail-oriented and able to accurately document information.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to work under tight deadlines.
- Knowledge of medical and research terminology in Spanish is a plus.
- Flexible, a quick learner, and can adapt to new situations with ease.
- Ability to work both independently and with a team from home, if necessary.

The hourly pay range for this position is from $29.19 to $41.56 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
