The Chief Data Officer of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, Jeff Leek, established the Fred Hutch Data Science Lab (DaSL), which aims to develop and support the overall data strategy for the organization. The mission of the DaSL to ensure an effective data ecosystem at Fred Hutch by developing a modern, well documented, well implemented, overall data strategy. This should serve the needs and capabilities of those leveraging data at Fred Hutch regardless of "where they live" from the clinic to the research groups. The Cloud Data System Administrator will support the development of a new translational data infrastructure, integrations, and user-facing applications. This team is responsible for the implementation of scalable, stable, and secure solutions in our centrally managed, cloud-based translational data infrastructure. Responsible for managing and securing cloud-based services and applications and will work closely with IT teams to ensure that cloud resources are provisioned, managed, and maintained in an efficient and secure manner. Will manage cloud-based infrastructure, including virtual machines, storage solutions, and networking components. Primarily responsible for ensuring seamless access to data and application resources for users through role-based permissions and maintaining compliance with data security and regulatory requirements. Collaborate with data engineers, data scientists, and data governance specialists to ensure our data systems are accessible, robust, and compliant.

Responsibilities
- Administer and manage cloud-based data systems (e.g., AWS infrastructure, Databricks, GitHub), ensuring high availability, reliability, and performance. Implement security best practices, including identity and access management in collaboration with the IT department.
- Develop and maintain automation scripts for managing cloud data infrastructure, user provisioning, and system updates. Utilize tools like Terraform, CloudFormation, or Ansible for infrastructure as code.
- Monitor the health and performance of cloud data systems and respond to incidents. Troubleshoot system and access issues to resolve problems quickly and maintain uptime.
- Develop and maintain role-based access controls and regularly review and update permissions to reflect changes in roles and organizational requirements.
- Collaborate with data governance specialists to ensure access controls and data management policies are compliant with relevant regulations (e.g., GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA). Conduct audits and compliance checks to monitor adherence to standards.
- Work closely with data engineers, data scientists, and other stakeholders to support their access and security needs. Provide guidance on best practices for secure data usage and system configuration.
- Implement and maintain backup strategies and disaster recovery plans for components of our translational data infrastructure in collaboration with IT staff.
- Provide technical support for end-user application development.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- BA/BS in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Minimum 4 years of experience in data or software engineering, technical system administration or other IT role.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must have excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with data scientists and analysts, other members of the engineering team, and members of the IT department.
- Experience with cloud data platforms (AWS preferred), including services like IAM, storage, and database services.
- Familiarity with data management tools and practices (e.g., Databricks).
- Proficiency in role-based access management, security policies, and identity management solutions.
- Experience with infrastructure as code tools (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation) and automation scripting (e.g., Python, PowerShell, Bash).
- Understanding of networking concepts, data encryption, and data protection techniques.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to quickly diagnose and resolve issues.
- Works with common programming languages, eg. Python
- Ability to work independently and to adapt to new and changing technologies
- Strong analytical and organizational skills and an ability to multi-task
- Experience working in highly regulated data environments, ideally with prior healthcare or research experience, including familiarity with HIPAA regulations.
- Experience with collaboration tools (Teams, Slack, Jira, Confluence).

The annual base salary range for this position is from $112,924 to $178,464, and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
