The Software Development Engineer II designs and develops software applications for new products or product enhancements where no optimal software solutions exist. Develops code to meet requirements and specifications of application. Performs testing, troubleshooting, and debugging of application throughout the development process.
The Office of Translational Research (OTR) creates environments which enable researchers and clinicians to accelerate scientific discovery and translate it into cures and research advances which significantly improve patient outcomes and quality of life. We do this by focusing on three key areas:
Building seamless infrastructure to optimize and speed translational research Strengthening tumor-specific translational research programs, and Strengthening partnerships between translational research institutions. This role supports tool improvement and user experience research for Oncoscape (our internally developed, web-based software application), a data visualization tool for analyzing molecular and clinical data. This position will carry out work to expand the applicability of the current, Angular-based Oncoscape tool through user experience design improvements and componentization into a new React solution. This role will work on componentizing key features, enabling components to live in various environments, and utilizing the tool's functionality in other applications.
You will be working alongside researchers, software engineers, and data scientists to develop innovative web and cloud solutions to problems in cancer research and translation of research into clinical practice.
Responsibilities
- Develop code to meet requirements and specifications of the application
- Help plan and extend Oncoscape web tool with product enhancements
- Help in breaking Oncoscape (a monolithic tool) into reusable components for handling and visualizing data related to patients and subjects in biomedical data sets, including:
- Design and implementation of components, including rewrite of existing code, as needed
- Design and implementation of component APIs, including test cases and documentation
- Composing of components into complete web sites
- Perform testing, troubleshooting, and debugging of application throughout the development process
- Follow software development best practices to design and develop software features to meet end user specifications
- Lead development of small to mid-sized projects
- Participate in code and design reviews
- Estimate software development tasks and participate in creating development and implementation schedules for features and applications
- Test & debug new and modified software
- Provide tier 3 support of software, troubleshoot user problems
- Create and maintain technical documentation
- Collaborate with and provide documentation for end users
- Ensure the tool is visually appealing, intuitive, and user-friendly
- Design and create new types of graphs for scientific data visualization
- Perform other responsibilities as required
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or other analytic field; sufficient experience may substitute.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in UX design and implementation.
- Experience developing data driven applications and architecture.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience with modern programming languages such as TypeScript, Python, etc., and modern constructs such as promises.
- Experience with general-purpose web site development (HTML, CSS, build and deployment), and React.
- Experience with version control systems such as git / GitHub.
- Experience in scientific data visualization or related fields.
- Experience with graphing libraries such as D3, Plotly, Vega, Highcharts, etc.
- Experience in defining and implementing APIs.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- Ability to work independently and within a team.
- Interest in cancer biology.
- Enthusiastic about speeding research.
- Demonstrated relationship building skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with React (hooks, functional components, context, etc.) development.
- Experience with Angular, for looking at our legacy code, is appreciated.
- Experience with WebGL or other browser-based 3D graphics system.
- Ability to take initiative and use sound and independent judgment in carrying out responsibilities and managing shifting priorities.
- Knowledge of clinical and research concepts or terminology.
- Experience in Python and/or R.
- Experience with AWS Services (such as S3, Batch, Lambda).
- Start up or small team experience preferred.
- Go getter attitude, team focused.

The annual base salary range for this position is from $97,552 to $154,148, and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
