The Berger lab is seeking a bright and motivated Research Technician II or III. The individual will perform experiments directed at understanding mechanisms of lung tumor development and identifying strategies for lung cancer therapy, as well as perform lab managerial duties such as inventory maintenance and training of new laboratory personnel. This is a fantastic opportunity for a scientist interested in making a difference in cancer medicine while developing and exercising skills in laboratory management.
Responsibilities
Primary Job Duties:
Research Technician II:
- Tissue culture of primary and immortalized human and rodent cell lines
- Molecular biology techniques such as protein extraction, immunoprecipitation, Western blotting
- Microbiology techniques such as cloning, maxipreps, minipreps of bacterial cultures
- Preparation of lentivirus for genetic studies
- Maintaining organized and complete lab records and inventories
- Preparation of reagents and media used in experiments
- Identify methodological problems in research protocol and implement modifications to optimize experimental results.
- Prepare and present written or oral progress reports concerning studies including assembly, organization, and interpretation of data.
- Assist in the design of experiments; may be responsible for the performance of individual research projects.
- Conduct literature reviews to assist in determining most suitable methods to be used in research.
- Assist in publication of results by proofreading, editing, and contributing ideas.
- Manage research records and sample databases
- Train and mentor new personnel
Research Technician III:
All primary job duties of Research Technician II, plus:
- May lead or supervise other laboratory personnel and be responsible for the daily operation of the laboratory.
- Collaborate with primary investigator and assist in designing experiments; examine proposals to determine projects and methodologies best suited to research objectives and the overall goals of the laboratory.
- Summarize and write for publication or presentation the results of research projects, often as co-author or author. Edit and write reports of research.
- Consult with the Principal Investigator and others in the scientific community on problems and related projects.
- Determine the most suitable methods to be used in research; determine appropriate experimental controls.
- Conduct literature reviews to assist in determining most suitable methods to be used in research
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Research Technician II:
- Bachelor's degree in a scientific field or extensive laboratory experience (4+ years) in a related scientific field
- 2 years previous experience working in a laboratory outside of school coursework
- Must have scientific knowledge in the area of study and basic laboratory skills
Research Technician III:
All minimum qualifications of Research Technician II, plus:
- Bachelor's degree in related scientific field or equivalent combination of education and experience
- 5 years of experience working in a lab outside of school coursework (or equivalent combination of advanced degree and work experience)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Research Technician II:
- Independent research experience in addition to school lab experience (Level II = outside of coursework)
- Highly motivated and intellectually curious
- A solid background knowledge in cell biology and/or cancer biology
- Excellent written and verbal skills
- Ability to maintain organized laboratory notebook and computer files
- Exceptional attention to detail
- Experience with standard laboratory techniques, including cell culture, flow cytometry, Western blotting, and immunofluorescence/confocal microscopy
Research Technician III:
All preferred qualifications of Research Technician II, plus:
- Master's degree in a related scientific field
Research Technician II: The hourly pay range for this position is from $26.48 to $37.70 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
Research Technician III: The hourly pay range for this position is from $32.77 to $49.14 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
